Touch is a vital human need and is just as important as food, shelter, or water. We cannot survive without this primal sense, however, mental health therapists treating trauma and mental health diagnoses are advised not to touch their clients. Safe ethical purposeful touch with boundaries can help restore and repair body and mind. As a licensed mental health therapist and drug and alcohol counselor, I incorporate somatic mindfulness (body awareness without touch), Bowen/fascia work, and somatic touch to meet this need. With each person, I ensure a sense of safety, autonomy, and agency during this process, promoting holistic healing and restoring a sense of belonging in this world.
Trauma or (toxic stress): Our nervous system and memory system has a spectrum of responses that at anytime could not be in capacity of surviving, learning from, and returning to equilibrium. Allostatic overload can be a result leaving the body depleted. Imagine a depleted system trying then to survive during any amount of stress (tolerable or intolerable, chronic or acute, big or small).
"Years ago, trauma was defined more by external events rather than the responses human beings have to those events. Psychological trauma can happen to anyone when they perceive a situation as a threat and are unable to complete a satisfactory fight, flight, or freeze response.
The nervous system is designed to keep us psychologically intact when we perceive we cannot keep ourselves safe in a situation. However, if we do not address the way in which our nervous and memory system categorized the event, the aftermath can be quite devastating." - Peter Levine
Hypnosis :
Professionals use clinical hypnosis to help clients bring about both psychological and physiological change in three main ways. First, they may use mental imagery or one’s imagination. The mind is capable of using imagery, even if it is only symbolic, to assist us in bringing about the changes we are working toward.
A second basic hypnotic method is used to present ideas or suggestions to the patient. In a state of concentrated attention, ideas and suggestions that are compatible with what the patient wants have a more powerful impact on the mind.
Finally, hypnosis may be used for unconscious exploration, to better understand underlying motivations or identify whether past events or experiences are associated with causing a problem. The effectiveness of hypnosis appears to lie in the way in which it bypasses the critical observation and interference of the conscious mind, allowing the client's intentions for change to take effect.
Each hypnotic method facilitates a natural, altered state of consciousness called trance which is usually very relaxing and where the critical mind is relatively inactive. The subconscious mind then accesses resources, skills and abilities while the person is awake and able to break trance at any time.
Bowen/Fascia Body Work:
People can wear loose comfortable clothing and all techniques/touches are done while fully clothed and with consent. Long sleeves are okay but please avoid high collars or turtle necks. Feel free to bring a change of clothes with you. Most people feel comfortable enough to go back to work or continue with their day. Some people feel tired or very relaxed afterward and feel the need to rest.
